Minutes of School Directors Meeting

Smilie Memorial School, Bolton, VT

April 7, 2004

 

Meeting came to order at 7:15 pm.

 

Attendees: John Alberghini, Gail Conley, Phil Graff, Fred Kenney, Ann Whitman

 

General Items:

1. There were no comments from community members.

 

2. Minutes from the March board meeting were not approved due to misplaced notes. If everyone with notes from the March meeting sends them to Vicky, she will get them ready for approval.

 

Principal’s Report:

The 2004 ski program was a big success due to the support from the staff at Bolton Valley, as well as parents and teachers who assisted.

Smilie’s new LCD projector has arrived and is in use. Smilie also received a 9x9 screen for the projector as a donation.

SAT 9 assessments and NSREs have been completed and sent to the appropriate parties.

Smilie’s spring performance will take place on May 26 at 6:30 pm. It will be a movie about Smilie School as seen through the eyes of a book character named Flat Stanley.

John is looking into the possibility of having two 60% kindergarten classes and two 40% preschool classes.

 

Superintendent’s Report:

 

1. There have been 19 applications for a new kindergarten/preschool teacher. Dr. Conley will have some more information about budgeting for a new hire, as well as offsetting cost by using the current K aide money and also using enrichment money. A hiring committee will be set up to look at applicants. There will also be investigations into hiring for these two positions as part-time hires to reduce heath care costs.

 

2. Fred moved to accept the revised invoice edit list total of $ 42,448.96; Ann seconded. All in favor.

 

Committee Reports:

Executive : Discussed Superintendent search and how to reduce the number of evening meetings they have to attend.

 

Curriculum: Discussed how to teach foreign language and ways to get town’s to see how important it is for schools to have this program.

 

Discussion Items:

 

1. Voting at the May 5th CESU spring meeting will be by Fred, Ann, and Phil.

 

2. Fred would like to approach the Town and the Bolton Civil Authority about changing the town’s emergency shelter locations. Currently the fire station and the town office are the designated shelter locations. Fred would like to see the school used as the primary shelter . Then the school could apply for emergency generators through the Homeland Security Department.

 

Items for next month’s agenda:

Change in testing due to NCLB.

Summer projects that John would like to see completed.

Meeting adjourned at 8:10 pm. Next meeting is scheduled for May 5, 2004, at Smilie School.
