MINUTES OF SCHOOL DIRECTORS MEETING

Smilie Memorial School, Bolton, VT

May 7, 2003

 

Meeting came to order at 7:10 pm.

 

ATTENDEES:

John Alberghini, Lisa Wells, Ann Whitman, and Fred Kenney, Kerri Wiltshire

 

GENERAL ITEMS

1.     There were no comments from community members.

 

2.     The minutes from April 2, 2003 were amended to read as follows: Action/Discussion items #2 “The Board discussed endorsing the formation …”

The last sentence of item #9 “Fred distributed …” moved to #10 Other Business.

Minutes approved as amended.

 

3.    Principal’s report:

School performance: John and Kerri discussed the school’s preparation and excitement for the black light performance of the Very Quiet Cricket on Monday.

Building/grounds maintenance: Dave Demers has put in 2-3 days work clearing in the woods and is willing to brush hog the new parking area next to the fire lane, behind the fence. John will continue to clear trees in that area.

Soccer field: the field is painted and the school purchased soccer goals and nets with grant money.

After -K and Preschool: The after-K program will be in the K room from 12:15 until the end of the school day. Ginny Gifford will go into the Pre-K room from 12:30 until the end of the day.

Computer grants: We didn’t get the Apple grant, but through the IBM matching program, we will be able to get 4 new computers.

 

 

ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS

1. Food service: We discussed the survey and possibility of purchasing form Black River Produce and other local vendors.

 

2. Bids: The snow removal contract is for 2 years and ends after the 2003-04 winter. No action needed.

The Board accepted bids from All Cycle for trash removal, Stevens Gas for propane, and Patterson Fuels for oil.

 

3. Fred moved to accept the invoice edit list total of $126,254.18; Ann seconded. All in favor.

 

4. Committee reports: Policy—Board voted to rescind the first version of policy A-18, Animals in School and adopt revised A-18. Lisa made the motion, Ann seconded. Approved.

Curriculum: reviewed comments on the 4th grade transition to 5th grade. Some comments reflected concern about the disconnect between Investigations and the middle school teachers’ expectations (rote, memorization of math facts). One middle school teacher said, “kids are coming in not knowing what they need to know.”

 

5. Other business: John and Bob will put up the flag pole this summer.

 

1.     Meeting adjourned at 8:25 pm. The next meeting has been scheduled for 7PM, June 4, 2003, at the Smilie School.
